25 copy-paste styles for your About, name and group names — plus the native formatting that's a better choice inside messages.
These styles are Unicode characters that look like fonts, not real formatting. Screen readers announce them one character at a time by their full Unicode name, so a fully styled post is unreadable to anyone using one — and search engines and in-app search cannot match them as words. Use them for a name, a heading or one emphasised phrase, and keep the text you want found or read aloud in plain characters.
Inside messages, wrap text in *asterisks* for bold, _underscores_ for italic, ~tildes~ for strikethrough and ```three backticks``` for monospace. That's genuine formatting — accessible, searchable, and it can't render as boxes. For chat, use this rather than the styles below.
WhatsApp doesn't parse formatting in your About text, your profile name or group names — those render literally. Unicode substitution is the only way to style them, and it works fine. Your About field is 139 characters, which the counter above tracks.
A styled group name or a divider character in a business About is the common legitimate use. Bear in mind that WhatsApp search inside chats matches plain text, so styled text won't be found when someone searches the conversation.
