Auto Captions Privacy Policy

This policy covers the Auto Captions mobile app.

Who we are

Auto Captions is operated by Teleprompter Kft., Podmaniczky utca 57. II. em. 14., 1064 Budapest, Hungary. For any privacy question you can reach us at support@teleprompter.com.

What information we collect

We do not ask you to create an account. The app works without a login, and we do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or contact list.

Videos you choose to caption. When you pick a video, Android's photo picker hands the app that one file. The app reads the audio from it and uploads it to our speech-to-text provider so that the words and their timings can be recognised. We do not receive or store a copy of your video on our own servers, and the app never gets access to the rest of your gallery.

Subtitle text, when you translate. If you add a translated caption track, the text of your subtitles is sent through our servers to our AI provider and the translation is sent back. If you never use translation, your subtitle text never leaves your device.

Technical and diagnostic data. If you have crash reporting enabled in your Android settings, Google Play may send us crash reports and basic performance data about the app, which include your device model, operating system version, and app version. This is handled by Google Play and is not tied to your identity by us.

We do not collect advertising identifiers, we do not track you across other apps or websites, and the app contains no advertising SDKs.

What stays on your device

Everything else the app produces is stored locally on your phone and is not uploaded to us:

your list of recordings and the videos themselves
the subtitles generated for each video, including any edits, timing changes, and deletions
your caption styles, saved presets, fonts, colours, and positioning
your app settings and language preference
videos you export with captions burned in, and any .SRT files you save or share

Language detection runs entirely on your device using Google's on-device ML Kit, and caption rendering and video export are also done on your device. Uninstalling the app removes all of it.

How we use your information

to transcribe the video you selected and produce word-level caption timings
to translate your captions when you ask for a translated track
to render and export your captioned video and subtitle files
to answer support requests you send us
to keep the service working, prevent abuse, and fix crashes

We do not use your videos, audio, or subtitle text to train AI models, and we do not use them for advertising or profiling.

How long we keep your data

Your videos and audio. Uploaded to our speech-to-text provider only for the length of the transcription request. We do not keep a copy.

Subtitle text sent for translation. Passed through our relay to the AI provider and returned to your device. We do not store the text of your subtitles.

Server logs. Our transcription and translation requests generate standard technical logs at our hosting provider — timestamp, IP address, request size, and error codes — kept for a short period for security and debugging, and then deleted.

Crash reports. Retained by Google Play according to its own retention schedule.

Everything on your device. Kept until you delete it in the app or uninstall the app. We cannot access it and we cannot delete it for you.

Deleting your data

You can delete any recording, its subtitles, and its exported files from inside the app at any time, and uninstalling the app removes all remaining app data from your phone. Because we do not hold an account for you and we do not store your videos or subtitles, there is nothing on our side left to delete. If you have written to support and want that correspondence deleted, email support@teleprompter.com.

Third-party services we use

ElevenLabs. Speech-to-text. The audio of the video you choose is sent to ElevenLabs so that it can be transcribed with word-level timings. ElevenLabs processes it under its own privacy policy and terms.

OpenAI. Caption translation. When you add a translated track, your subtitle text is sent to OpenAI through our relay, under OpenAI's own privacy policy and terms.

Google Cloud and Firebase. Hosting for the relay that forwards translation requests, and for our internal test distribution builds.

Google Play. Distribution of the app, app updates, and crash reporting.

Google Fonts. Some caption fonts are downloaded on demand through the Google Fonts provider built into Android.

We do not sell your data to any of these companies, and none of them receive it for their own marketing.

Permissions the app asks for

The app requests internet access only. It does not ask for camera, microphone, contacts, location, or full photo-library access. Videos reach the app one at a time through Android's system photo picker, which does not grant the app any wider access to your files.

How we protect your information

Traffic between your device, our servers, and our AI providers is encrypted using HTTPS and TLS. Access to our production infrastructure is limited to the staff who need it in order to operate the service. Because your videos, subtitles, and styles stay on your device, the amount of your data we hold at any moment is deliberately small. No system is perfectly secure, but we take these measures seriously and review them as the product changes.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, have it corrected, have it exported, or have it deleted. Email support@teleprompter.com and we will respond within 30 days. In practice the app holds almost nothing about you on our side, so most requests are answered by confirming what we do and do not have. If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority; ours is the Hungarian National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (NAIH).

Cookies and tracking

The app does not use cookies, advertising identifiers, or cross-app tracking, and there is no third-party analytics or advertising SDK inside it. There is no agreed industry standard for responding to Do Not Track signals, so we do not change what we collect based on them.

Children

Auto Captions is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal data, email support@teleprompter.com and we will delete it.

Selling of data and advertising

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information, and we do not display third-party advertising inside Auto Captions.

California residents

You can use the app without creating an account, and this privacy policy is linked from the app's store listing and from within the app. California residents may request access to, or deletion of, their personal information, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising those rights.

If something goes wrong

Should a data breach affect your personal information, we will notify you within 7 business days of becoming aware of it, in addition to any notification required by law. Because the app has no accounts, notice will be given in the app and on this page.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the product changes. The current version is always on this page, with the Last updated date at the top. Material changes will be announced in the app.
